DAY CARE
At Durban and Coastal Mental Health, we provide professional special care, stimulation and developmental re-education for children with severe and profound intellectual disabilities who reside with their families.
Children with intellectual disabilities and special needs are not accepted in mainstream schools, crèches and other places of care. They face stigma and discrimination and are often neglected and marginalised by their communities.
We provide a package of care so that these children can grow and reach their full potential, and live a meaningful and dignified life. Their parents and care-givers are also afforded an opportunity to seek employment as the risk of abuse and neglect of their children is reduced when they are cared for at the Happy Hours centres during the day.
Some of the children we care for tend to grow and learn more slowly, some will never walk or talk and depend on others for much needed assistance. Some are also blind, deaf and suffer frequent seizures. We therefore place emphasis on planned development programmes, customised for each child. Our comprehensive Day Care Programme includes assessment and specialised training, a feeding scheme and a transport service. Families benefit too, by receiving valuable guidance and support to help them cope with the taxing responsibility of caring for a severely disabled child.
We run 9 Happy Hours Day Care Centres and offer special care to over 210 children. These Centres are situated in:
- Amaoti - Inanda
- Durban North
- KwaXimba
- Marianhill
- Mpumalanga, Hammarsdale
- Ninikhona - Ndwedwe
- Nyangwini - Mthwalune
- Overport
